Vasant Kunj

Green, low-rise south-west Delhi twenty minutes from both terminals, with three malls, Qutub Minar close and almost no street life.

Vasant Kunj is the version of Delhi that planners are proud of: numbered sectors of DDA flats and builder floors, jamun and neem trees closing over the roads, and a ridge of scrub forest on the Mehrauli side that still has peacocks in it. Nelson Mandela Marg runs through the middle and carries the whole thing, with DLF Promenade, DLF Emporio and Ambience Mall standing shoulder to shoulder on one stretch. Nothing is old here except the land. If you want monuments outside your door, this is the wrong postcode entirely.

What it buys you is airport proximity without Mahipalpur grime. Terminal 3 is roughly twenty minutes off-peak down NH-48 and the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur road, Terminal 1 is closer still, and unlike Aerocity you get trees, birds, and a chai stall rather than a hotel driveway. Rooms in the four-star places along Nelson Mandela Marg sit around ₹5,500 to ₹9,000 a night in January, and there is a genuinely cheap layer in Kishangarh village, the old settlement swallowed by the sectors, where clean guesthouse rooms go for ₹1,200 to ₹2,000.

At nine at night the sector roads are near-silent. Market blocks in Sector B and C keep their chemists and momo carts going until about half ten, the malls empty out by eleven, and after that it is security guards, stray dogs and the odd auto. Nobody walks between sectors for fun because the distances are two kilometres of unlit service road. This is a place you drive or ride out of, and then come back to sleep in something quiet.

It suits people flying in late and out early, families who want space, shoppers with real money for Emporio, and anyone using Qutub Minar, Mehrauli Archaeological Park and Sanjay Van as their reason for being in Delhi. Skip it if you are here for four days of Old Delhi and Connaught Place, or if you are catching night trains from New Delhi station, which is a punishing 18 km away. Skip it also if you want a bar you can stumble home from. There is no such bar.

Where to stay in Vasant Kunj

The best beds are the hotel row on Nelson Mandela Marg, walkable to DLF Promenade and Ambience Mall, and the serviced apartments in Sector B Pocket 5 and Sector C Pocket 6, where quiet builder-floor flats let for ₹2,500 to ₹4,500 a night with a kitchen. Expect ₹5,500 to ₹9,000 for four-star, ₹1,200 to ₹2,000 for a Kishangarh guesthouse, and steep spikes during the wedding weeks of late November and early December when every banquet lawn on Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road is booked. Avoid anything advertised as Vasant Kunj that turns out to be on the Mahipalpur side of NH-48 — that is a different, noisier world with truck horns all night. Avoid ground-floor rooms facing the main road too; the Nelson Mandela Marg traffic never fully stops.

Start at the Qutub Minar ticket gate on Anuvrat Marg, cross into the Archaeological Park, and pick up the path to Jamali Kamali mosque and tomb. Continue past Balban's tomb and the arch that art historians argue about, drop into Rajon ki Baoli stepwell, then Quli Khan's tomb with its Metcalfe folly additions. Exit at Adham Khan's tomb by Mehrauli bus stand and take an auto back for about ₹100.

From Terminal 3 a prepaid taxi is ₹400 to ₹550 and takes twenty minutes off-peak, forty at 6pm. From Terminal 1, ride the Magenta Line three stops to Vasant Vihar station on Nelson Mandela Marg, then an auto for ₹80 to ₹120 into the sectors. From New Delhi railway station, take the Yellow Line to Hauz Khas and change to the Magenta Line for Vasant Vihar — about 50 minutes plus the auto. Inside Vasant Kunj nothing is walkable to anything else: sectors are two kilometres apart along service roads with no footpath worth the name. Budget ₹60 to ₹150 per auto hop, or use app cabs, which are plentiful here at any hour.
