Karsiyang is about 30 kilometres from Darjeeling and around 50 kilometres from Siliguri, which is the nearest major city with rail and air connections. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs through Karsiyang, and the town is also accessible by road via National Highway 55. From New Delhi, you can take a flight to Bagdogra Airport or a train to New Jalaliaguri, then travel by road or toy train to Karsiyang. Local transport includes shared jeeps, taxis and buses. Within Karsiyang, many places are within walking distance, but steep terrain means vehicles are often used for longer distances.
When to go
The best time to visit Karsiyang is from March to May, when the weather is pleasant and the rhododendrons and orchids are in bloom. The monsoon months from June to September bring heavy rainfall and occasional landslides. October to November offers clear skies and excellent views of the Himalayas. Winter, from December to February, can be chilly, with temperatures sometimes dropping near freezing, but the days are often sunny.
