Chakrata is about 90 kilometres from Dehradun, the nearest major city, and around 300 kilometres from New Delhi. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, and the nearest railway station is also in Dehradun; from there you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Chakrata. Buses run from Dehradun's ISBT to Chakrata, but the service may be limited, and by road the journey takes around 3 to 4 hours from Dehradun. Within Chakrata, local taxis and shared jeeps are available, as public transport is limited. Many attractions are within walking distance if you stay in the main town.
When to go
The best time to visit Chakrata is from March to June, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for outdoor activities. The monsoon months of July and August bring heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides and make travel difficult. Winter, from December to February, is cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and occasional snowfall. If you enjoy cold weather and snow, winter can be a good time, but be prepared for chilly conditions.
