About Roorkee

Roorkee grew around the Upper Ganges Canal, which was built in the mid-19th century to irrigate the Doab region. The canal headquarters and the engineering college gave the city a distinctive Anglo-Indian character, with colonial-era buildings, bungalows and wide tree-lined avenues. Today Roorkee is a busy educational and commercial centre, with a mix of historic institutions and modern coaching hubs.

For visitors, Roorkee offers a glimpse of colonial engineering history, the lively campus of IIT Roorkee, and easy access to Haridwar and Rishikesh. The city is also a convenient stopover on the route between Delhi and the hill stations of Uttarakhand.
